Virtual Learning Environment Solutions, Inc., is a micro-independent software vendor (mISV or μISV) producing educational software that puts the learner (student) in control of the learning process. Rather than producing content in new ways, VLE Solutions focuses on teaching the student how to take advantage of his or her personal learning style to learn from any presentation of content. VLE Solutions was founded by Daniel E. Himes, Ph.D. and is located in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

I was in front of a classroom for 15 years, the last 10 as a professor of physics, and I have worked with hundreds of students challenged by learning. I have employed the best practices in learning technology for years, and my students have advanced in the fields of medicine, engineering and technology.

As my own children grew, it became clear that one of them faces a difficult challenge in reading comprehension. I decided to answer that challenge directly. Armed with my experience in teaching technology, I sought the expertise of reading specialists and consulted the scientific literature to find out what, in fact, works.

The result was Reading-1 (R-1), a no-nonsense tool to help struggling readers learn the strategies that will last a lifetime. R-1 is not a toy. It is not a baby-sitter. When I started working with teachers and other educators on using R-1 in their programs I learned two things. The first thing I learned was that a lot of middle-school kids were falling through the cracks in reading. This was particularly true of reasonably bright kids who were able to fake it through the early grades on wits alone but receive a rude awakening in middle school.

The second important thing I learned was that kids needed a lot of help with writing, especially help with basic organization.
